The rumor site Canon Rumors has received a notice that he can no longer use the Canon name for a domain at his website! This is wrong on so many levels. Here’s a guy that’s an avid Canon user and promoting Canon products and they want him to stop? While I’m not a lawyer, I think the purpose of a trademark is to prevent someone from using the name to market a product, not to prevent someone from talking or writing about the same product or company. Finally, I’d think he would be protected under the First Amendment in the use of their name. How can you talk about a company and it’s products without using the company’s name? 

I hope Nikon doesn’t follow suit as Nikon Watch and Nikon Rumors are two of my favorite sites for Nikon info.

Leaked photos have appeared on Photography Bay showing the rumored Sony A900. Specs included indicate a 24.6 Megapixel, full frame receptor with up to 5 fps continuous shooting. 

Photokina starts September 23 and from all the different rumors, it should be interesting.

Check out Jeffrey Freidl’s Blog for a cool series of photos of the Nikon D3 shutter in slow motion. The work was done by Marianne Oelund. The amazing thing is the system she used. It’s not done with a high speed video camera! She actually photographed the sequence using another D3 shooting single frames. She used an oscilloscope to time the delay between the release of the second D3. Now, my undergraduate degree was in Electrical Engineering and I have an oscilloscope on the shelf, but this blows me away. I’ve got to do some research and experiments with this, way cool.

Ever wonder how the photographers at “super events” such as the Olympics get the awesome shots they do? It takes planning, preparation, tons of gear, and being able to handle any obstacles thrown your way. Take a look at the preparation for the men’s 100-meter-dash courtesy of Vincent Laforet (movie). It’s a cool insight into what goes on behind the scenes in sports photography. I’d bet that, despite all that gear, only a couple of photographers got a shot that Sports Illustrated would take. Luck does play into the equation.

It looks like most of the cameras were hard-wired to remote triggers. This isn’t surprising consider the limited channels for remotes. One shot did show multiple cameras with Pocket Wizards. The top-of-the-line Pocket Wizard, the MultiMAX Pro, has 32 channels. I wonder how they coordinate the channels so there isn’t overlap. Of course, considering they aren’t limited to 36 frames and they all are holding down the trigger for the full 10 seconds of the event, it probably doesn’t matter. You could hook them all together and trigger them en masse with the difference being the point of view and lens selection. Notice that no two cameras are set the same, different lenses and angles, and I’m sure, different exposures.
